Owens with another outstanding week

Monday, February 22nd 2010

It was Chris Owens week again in the MJAHL. But his Miramichi Timberwolves played just 2 games so he only scored 11 points. Oh yes, 10 of them were in one game. In all, one goal, ten assists. His challenger for the league point lead, Truro’s Dana Fraser also had a good week, by normal standards, earning 7 points in two games (1 goal, 6 assists). Also notching seven were Miramichi’s Jesse MacIntyre (3 goals – all in one game – and 5 assists) and Kyle Lampenski (5 goals – also a hat trick - and 2 assists) and Summerside’s Will Johnston (4 goals, 3 assists). Owens’ lead over Fraser for the season lead is now 7 points; he has 90, Fraser has 83. The Timberwolves have 2 games left, and Fraser has been averaging just under 5 points a game (26 in his last 6 games), so there’s an chance he will reach 100.

Lampenski was the big scorer of the week, getting 5 in 2 games, including a hat trick. Chris Ivanko of the Bearcats also had a hat trick and 4 goals for the week. Summerside’s Johnston also had 4 goals. MacIntyre had the 3rd hat trick of the week. The season goal leader, Slammer Nick Huard added 2 to his total and now stands at 41, trailed by teammate Brogan Bailey with 34 (2 this week), Summerside’s Chad Earle at 32 (who added 3) and Mariner Carl Hayes at 29 (1 goal in his only game).

Owens 10 assists dominated the helper list for the week. Fraser had 6 and MacIntyre, Lumberjack R. D. Chisholm, and Miramichi’s Sterling Bear all had 4. Owens improved his year’s total to 67, ten ahead of Fraser who is followed by Woodstock’s Lucas McKinley at 46.

Two goalies posted shutouts in their only appearances this week. Yarmouth’s Alex Newman got his first f the year against his former team, Weeks Crushers, and Jonathan Waye of Amherst got his second of the season against Campbellton. Truro’s Richard Gagnon allowed just a single goal in his one game. Bearcat Kirk Rafuse remains atop the goalie standings with a 2.13 GAA and a .925 save %. Gagnon would lead had he played enough games to qualify; he has a 1.69 GAA and a .931 save % in 9.5 games. Andre Guay is at 2.50 GAA and .914 save % for Woodstock.
